The 1989 La Conseillante is one of my favourite vintages from this decade and in recent years has probably matured better than its 1990 counterpart. The most recent bottle confirms this. Even at 29 years of age it boasts an astonishing, exuberant, floral nose with crushed violet interwoven into the plush black cherry and blueberry fruit. There is something ravishing, sumptuous yet not decadent about these aromatics. The palate continues the theme with plush, cashmere tannin, perfect acidity and disarming purity. It has tremendous depth with a finish that you could almost describe as "spherical", not a hard edge in sight. It is a magnificent La Conseillante, one of the finest Pomerols in 1989. (NM)
Somewhat similar to the 1990, but slightly more structured, with more noticeable tannin and a meatier style, this is still a very perfumed, exotic, expansive, sensationally concentrated wine that should age effortlessly for another 10-15 years. In that sense, it might actually outlast the 1990, but what a pair these two wines make. The wine has a dark garnet/ruby color and fabulous aromatics of black raspberries, kirsch, licorice, and copious amounts of toasted new oak. Relatively full-bodied for a La Conseillante, with great purity, sweet tannin, but noticeable structure and muscle, this is a relatively large-scaled La Conseillante that has always been one of the top wines of the vintage. Offers sweet, dried fruits on the nose, with plum jam and Turkish delight candies. Full-bodied, with big velvety tannins and loads of fruit. Chewy and Porty. Has turned so decadent and yummy over the years. (JS, Web Only-2010)
A bit tart like the 1990. This was more popular with the other tasters but I found its superripeness just a tiny bit lacking in refreshment. Strong black-cherry flavours. 17.5/20 points.
