Of the 1994 Châteauneufs that I have tasted (admittedly a small sampling), Andre Brunel’s Les Cailloux gets my vote as the best of the vintage. This wine is simply an outstanding bottle of Châteauneuf, as it jumps from the glass in a mélange of black berries, woodsmoke, ground pepper, game, green olives, garrigue and a hot stone sous bois. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and beautifully balanced, with a fine core of fruit, excellent acidity, melting tannins, and great length and grip on the complex finish. Superb stuff with years and years of life ahead of it. (Drink between 2006-2020)
Brunel has produced one of the finest 1994 Chateauneuf du Papes, a full-bodied, impressively textured and concentrated wine that is not far off the mark of his great 1989 and 1990. The 1994 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, a wonderful Provencal nose of seaweed, black olives, and copious quantities of black and red cherries and raspberries. (RP)
