91 points Robert Parker: "The Pinot Noir that comes from the vineyard surrounding the spooky looking house at the top of the knoll overlooking Dehlinger's winery is called Octagon. The 1997 is a terrific effort that should drink well for 6-8 years. This big, boldly-styled, rich wine exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as copious quantities of cherry liqueur, roasted meats, dried herbs, spice, and chocolate. Explosive on the palate, with Dehlinger's impressive glycerin, concentration, and fruit extraction, this is another crowd-pleasing, sumptuous Pinot Noir to enjoy now and over the next 7-8 years. Production was 390 cases." (01/2000) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Combines ripe, supple, polished plum, black cherry and berry notes, framed by pretty toasty vanilla-scented oak. Holds its focus on the finish. Drink now through 2006. 390 cases made." (07/2000) 90 points Stephen Tanzer: "Good medium red. Deeper aromas of plum, redcurrant, mocha and cinnamon; less fruit-driven and more Burgundian than the RRV bottling. Sweeter, thicker and more pliant on the palate; full and concentrated. Sappy, dense cherry and red berry flavors carry through to the persistent finish. Tannins are smooth and harmonious." (Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/June 00)
