A superb discovery from an area of Tuscany better known for its dry whites made from the Vernaccia grape than for red wines, the Fattoria Paradiso has turned out this impressive offering. Made from 100% Sangiovese aged in French oak, the 1997 Paterno II exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, flamboyant, smoky, chocolate, espresso, and cherry-driven aromas and flavors, a voluptuous, beautifully rendered texture, fine purity, superb, jammy ripeness, and a dense, chewy, full-bodied finish that lasts for nearly 30 seconds. It is an outstanding wine that should drink well for 7-8 years. This is an impressive offering from the historic village of San Gimignano. (RP)
