The 1998 Merlot is light, but it is undoubtedly one of the finest Merlots produced in this irregular vintage. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc (1,750 cases), Jayson Pahlmeyer and winemaker Erin Green decided to eliminate 38% of the wine. Firm, with rich coffee- and leather-scented black cherry, currant, mineral, anise and sage notes that gain tannic weight on the finish. A little rough around the edges now, but give it a year or so.
