This is pure vintage 2002, but it is not labeled as such. Paul Vincent Ariston says that his 25-year-old vines reflect the vintage, but the Prestige, made from vines averaging 60 years, reflect his terroir. He feels that putting a vintage date on this wine would be an insult to his best vineyard plots. Sadly these plots were destroyed by hail in July of 2003, and this is the last of the old vine Aspasie Brut Prestige. It is composed of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Meunier. This was one of the best bottles from my 2010 trip, and we drank two just to make sure! It has fantastic Brouillet black cherry power, and finishes very dry and super long. It is a powerhouse in the style of a vintage Bollinger, but with even more soul! Like almost all Champagne, this wine has relatively low alcohol, 12%. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

    A blend of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir & 25% Pinot Meunier, this 2002 cuvee demonstrates just how ideal the vintage was with its classic nose of ripe Chardonnay fruit. Pushing through are aromas of ripe apple and lemon with hints of chalkiness. The full bodied golden texture is a definite nod to the 60+ year old vines that were used for this cuvee.

    This is the best incarnation of this cuvee that I have tried. From the 2002 vintage, this old vine cuvee offer more power and length that you typically find in Champagne at this price point. Red Pinot fruit and toasty yeast play out on its great finish.

    This shows the power and intensity of the great 2002 vintage in Champagne. Rich, yeasty, stone fruit inflected nose leads to a ripe, yet balanced palate - a fun wine for drinking.

    Cinnamon and I drank this fantastic bottle over the last couple of days and it impressed us both immensely. It has old vine weight and intensity, but still maintains a vigor and brightness that succeeded in tempting me into drinking a little too much of it and the Burgundy that followed it... I blame Paul Vincent Ariston for leading me down the wrong path - again!

    Fun fact about Ariston: their winemaker Paul-Vincent uses the best juice from his younger vines for the Vintage champagne...and the best juice from his older vines for the'Aspasie'! I popped a bottle last night and was instantly transported to Brouillet. Mature old vine flavor, dry and classy! Drink it cool but not ice-cold to capture all the flavors...
