Pale gold. Exotic aromas of apricot, butterscotch, honey and smoky, spicy oak; tangy and inviting. Big, rich and spicy, with captivating flavors of peach, apricot and vanilla. Densely packed but kept fresh by brisk acidity. Finishes with excellent length and firm structure. This has terrific personality. An excellent showing.
Tasted at the Doisy-Védrines vertical at the château, the 1999 Château Doisy-Védrines is a noticeably deeper color and is almost identical in appearance to the 1990! It has a deep and less refined nose than more recent vintages with touches of marmalade, orange-blossom and apricot. It is a little oxidative, but nothing that detracts from the overall quality. The palate is medium-bodied with notes of mandarin, orange peel and pineapple, although it perhaps lacks some complexity on the finish with barley sugar and Clementine lingering on the aftertaste. Tasted September 2008. (NM)
