Ripe and well-balanced, with juicy plum, blackberry and black cherry fruit that's elegant, rich and well-defined. Avoids being overly herbal or tannic, though a touch of bell pepper comes through on the finish.
Medium ruby, less deep than the '97. Moderately ripe aromas of berries, dark chocolate and fresh herbs. Ripe and supple, but smaller-scaled and less nuanced than the '97. Still, this has good middle-palate texture and balance for the vintage. Finishes with dusty tannins and good but not outstanding length.
The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (which includes a touch of Merlot in the blend) reveals a certain austerity along with hints of dried herbs, coffee beans, and red currants. It is medium-bodied, with a dry, spare finish.
